Gaelcholáiste hosted Pobalscoil Eanna in a Leinster U17 schoolboys Quarter – Final last week on Friday the 2nd of December. This was both sides’ first game of the competition, as they were both given a number of walkovers in previous rounds. The game got off to a relatively slow start, that is until a Pobalscoil Eanna player was shown a straight red for striking Gaelcholáiste right midfielder, Tomás Ó Cuillin in an off-the-ball incident. Gaelcholáiste striker Seán Ó Catháin opened the scoring with a curling half volley into the near top corner. Pobalscoil Eanna created chances but Gaelcholáiste’s defence, led by captain Evan Ó Córráin and keeper Evan Ó Cíarán managed to keep them at bay. Not long after the first, Luc O Hutáin’s volley dipped up and over the opposing keeper to give the home team a second. Pobalscoil Eanna managed to get one back right before the half directly from a looping cross.
Both teams returned to kick off the second half, but it was Pobalscoil Eanna who came out all pistons firing. They equalised early on, followed by another to put them in the lead about twenty minutes later. Both teams created chances, although Eanna were holding their lead for the time being. With no more than five minutes left of regular time, Evan Ó Corráin’s whipped corner was met by Seán Ó Catháin six yards out, not before a frantic goal line scramble.
The first half of extra time kicked off, with chances at either end, but neither side converting. This continued until the last minute of extra time, when Daniel Ó Donegáin slipped Seán Ó Catháin through on goal. He didn’t waste his chance, slotting it past the Eanna keeper to put Gaelcholáiste through to the Semi-Finals.
